Today we had Arna in for her first session at the facility and as a pretty young dog, with good foundations taught through the Academy we had a really easy and straight forward session.

When people come in with younger dogs that haven't had years to solidify terrible habits, it's so much easier to change behaviour. It becomes much more difficult to address things when you've had years of habits built up and the dog knows no difference.

Today Arna had some issues with barrier frustration. Wanting to go and play with other dogs, which on the surface might not even seem like a problem but it quickly develops into full blown reactivity.

We had a chat about some of the fundamentals that were missing, and some others that could be improved with changing her response and opinion on other dogs. We need to create neutrality in dogs like this and that in itself makes the whole thing much easier!

She's been out walking today no issues with Eden and Shane's dog Ernie and she was absolutely great. Life is SO much easier for trainer, client and dog when these issues are addressed early on!

It’s About the 1%

Improvements in dog training very seldom happen with massive breakthroughs where you’re amazed at how well your dog does. They happen now and then but they’re very rare.

The truth of dog training is that each day you push forward and try to improve 1% and often even less. Half a percent, a quarter of a percent, a tenth of a percent.

Everyday you do a little bit more and that’s just what I’ve done with Khaleesi. Everyday we work towards the end goal, everyday we do a little bit and it soon starts adding up.

I’m immensely proud of how she worked today. This is the field and the people where she has her blow outs, no rules, no obedience just all fun and today she worked out of her skin.

First time she’s ever done emergency recalls off the bite. She was outing and recalling at distance, doing heelwork all in the presence of her favourite decoy.

Work on being 1% better, not 50% better and you’ll have a much smoother journey!

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

A famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt and one that carries a lot of truth in it in all aspects of life, but in dog training as well. I was reading a book last night before I went to bed and it got me thinking about how we measure our success as owners in our dog training.

We constantly measure our success based on how good we are doing compared to somebody else whether that be a friend, a family member or just someone else at the park who's dog looks better trained than yours. This is toxic and will cause you a lot of stress.

See success really isn't how well you are doing compared to someone else and it's also not a destination. Success is a feeling, not a place. Success is subjective and how you define it is entirely up to you. Some people define it as achieving certain goals, and that's awesome, to an extent I do too, but I think there's something more key to success than goals.

Success should be a single goal. A never changing goal that remains constant throughout your entire journey. The goal you should be aiming for to be successful is to make sure your training is better than it was yesterday. Be forever improving. If you are improving, you are on the right track.

Comparing your journey to someone else is foolish. Do they have the same work rota? Do they have the same knowledge? Have they been doing it the same length of time? Are you as naturally gifted as them? Do they have more finance to invest into learning? There's a million and one variables.

Take me and my Jiu Jitsu journey. I am never, ever in a million years going to be the top of the tree in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu... I'm never even going to be considered good. I live for dog training, and Jiu Jitsu is my hobby. What I can do though, is get on those mats everyday and improve. I can strive to be a better version of myself and THAT is success.

We do the same with our dog training. Go out and train today, in order to be 1% better than you were yesterday. Keep this goal at the front of your mind. True success is falling madly in love with the journey.

Today we had Ned in for his first session at the facility with a behaviour that I don't see all that much of! It is something I deal with but we see SO much reactivity that it was good to get hands on with something a bit different!

Ned is a resource guarder. He guards absolutely everything and anything. Paper, screws, clothes, toys, bones, food, and his biggest value of all, shoes. The problem with dogs that guard such an array of objects is that management only goes so far. You can't live in a world where there is never anything to guard.

The video filmed doesn't really show how much Ned can escalate but he bit his owner last week so I knew we needed to get a wiggle on quickly getting this sorted!

We brought Ned in and straight away got him something that he wanted to guard so I could see the behaviour and then I took his lead and we got to work. Ultimately Ned was ENJOYING guarding things, it wasn't based in conflict and nerve as so many would have people believe.

What we needed to do was make Ned realise that there is NO value in guarding the object and only value in relinquishing the object. This starts to build new associations to shape new behaviours.

As soon as we started teaching Ned that he would NOT find value in guarding the object, he started getting the picture very very fast. As you can see in the video, he actively starts avoiding guarding and choosing to engage instead.

You Don't Work For Free

There's a really easy piece of advice in dog training that MANY of my Academy members follow and it has totally changed their game. Hopefully they will comment below sharing their story.

If your boss started calling you up and telling you he will pay you for free every week regardless of whether you turn up to work or not, there's a good chance that you would stop going to work real fast, or you'd stop going as often at least.

And it's no different for dogs. You take their food every day, and put it in a bowl on the kitchen floor regardless of what they have been doing all day. They can run riot, cause havoc, not recall, pull on the lead, and the payment still gets put on the floor.

Change HOW you feed your dog, not what you feed your dog. Weight out their daily allowance first thing in the morning and put it on the side. Then throughout the day, fill up your pockets and feed it by hand, during training.

Train in the house, train out and about, train in the garden. I STILL hand feed my adult dogs to this day and it changes the game massively for people. It's the reason there's nearly twenty academy videos surrounding engagement in the Academy.

And for those who say their dog has no food drive, this isn't true mate! All dogs have food drive because food is a fundamental requirement for life. The problem is they have incorrect association to food. Why would they take food out and about when they get it for free at home.

Persevere for a few days and you will see the changes. Hand feed everything and watch your relationship change!

Deebo By Name, Deebo By Nature

Today we had this big lad in for his first session. Named after a bully from a popular TV show and a bully he was!

Deebo has some issues with human aggression, and some of it was driven by nerve and some of it was driven by habitual behaviour that bullying people makes them go away. Naturally he had learned this because when a 50kg Rottie spits teeth at people they tend to back up. It's a normal response.

Anyway, we had a good chat about Deebo's history, where the behaviour had come from, what has gone on etc and really nothing massive has happened in his life and its pretty clear that his behaviour has been learned through multiple small interactions over the years.

Ultimately, despite what many would like to have people believe, you cant simply wait for behaviour like this to go away and more love and cheese also isn't fixing it. Behaviour like this is dangerous and needs addressing.

We put corrections in for Deebo's behaviour and he started understanding quite quickly that this behaviour wasn't desired and picking a bit of avoidance which we rewarded to start building new associations.

There's definitely a lot of work to do to make these behaviours solid and as you can see in the video, there's a huge improvement because when he first got out the car he went absolutely spare.

Behaviours like this are a game of time and repetitions. There's no hugely quick fixes, no magic wands, just hard work and lots of reps!

Today we had Bambi in for her first session here at the facility and I don't think I've ever trained a dog with this name! Bambi had reactivity to other dogs but almost certainly based in frustration because she's actually a really clear, happy go lucky dog.

When we have reactivity based in frustration its much easier to fix than real aggression or severe nerve because there's much less going on psychologically. This is just a dog that desperately wants to get over to play and cause havoc.

Bambi is still super young at under a year old and her owner has worked really hard trying his best to train her. He did the puppy courses and learned plenty and now wants to get on to the next chapter.

First thing was sorting how Bambi responded to the lead and how we can use it to communicate various things with her which didn't take long at all. Then I handled her with Khaleesi out and she was awesome so I handed the lead back and we got into teaching her owner.

Today Bambi has been out with Flak, Khaleesi and Eden with no issues whatsoever. No barking, no lunging, no kicking off and I am super excited to see how she gets on at home with her owner. Dont think he will have any issues at all carrying this one on!

Getting The Work In!

Today I had Tom and Dev (Left) and Deb and Goose (Right) in for their 1-1 sessions and we had a blast. I've seen both these guys before as they are members of Obsidian Evo so I see them at club and I have seen them both for privates too.

It was immensely refreshing to see progress has definitely been made! Dev was working on remaining calm and working on his distractions in obedience. As Tom is a Dog Handler he is on site a lot and does a lot of his training there so Dev hadn't done enough work out and about. Well today he was awesome. We were working on calmness and clarity in his obedience and he was improved ten fold from last time I saw him which just proves how hard Tom is working. To finish off we did a little bite work session with down stays, impulse control and working on calmness in his grips! Massive well done Tom!

Deb and Goose had a slightly different issue with some environmental nerve but honestly a lot of it was Deb's mindset and expecting things to go wrong. When she first brought Goose to Evo club day we had a lot of work to do but she too has got her head down and got working which has been awesome to see. This dog wouldn't engage with anyone, she just stood woofing in the corner. Today she's done some very easy bite work with me and a bit of obedience with Deb.

I am super proud of both these guys after getting the work in today and I have no doubt that both of them will get their white collars through the Evo grading system in the near future.

Tom - Once you have solidified that distraction work. You are there. So eyes on the prize and let's get to work my man!

Working Dogs ARE Family

So I just wanted to dispel a few myths surround working dogs and in particular protection dogs.

All of my dogs are fully trained protection dogs. We’ve spent years training so they can work for real, on real jobs, with real danger, and live peacefully in my house as family members.

Working dogs, sport dogs, highly trained dogs often have the best life around. They’re super stimulated and their handlers spend countless hours with them on and off the field.

Our working dogs are honoured, cherished, loved just like every other dog except they also have something to do everyday!

In this picture, Flak is laying on the sofa with me and my three year old, chewing his ball, enjoying a Saturday afternoon like any other dog.

The anthropomorphism of dogs is killing the species. They’re not babies, they’re dogs and they damn right deserve to be treated as such.

They’re amazing creatures and capable of so much more than sitting around being obese.

Stop chastising dogs with jobs!

Giving the dogs a blowout!

Today we’ve been giving the dogs a well deserved blowout doing what they enjoy best!! All three of my dogs are working protection dogs and obviously we put a lot of work in to make sure they are stable, social, well mannered members of society and my house.

But once in a while, they deserve to just do what they love with no rules and loads of fun! All three of them had an awesome time. They’ve been working so hard on nose work and obedience that they deserved it.

No matter what your dogs ‘thing’ is it’s really important that sometimes you just have fun with them! Sometimes you should just forget about training for a day and let your dog do what they love most!

If it’s playing ball, protection, swimming in a river, agility, exploring a forest, it doesn’t matter! Go out, let the dogs run off their steam and have fun!

Then get back to training! 👊🏽

Manic Behaviour and Dog Aggression

Today we had Kona in for her first session here at the facility after she'd had a couple of really unfortunate events where she'd escaped the garden and caused some fairly severe damage to a local dog so her owners being responsible wanted to get this nipped in the bud asap and they booked in short notice on a cancellation slot I had so well done to them for that!

As soon as Kona got out the car, her owner panicked when I came over, worrying that the aggression would pass over to people as well but she was completely fine when I took her lead a few minutes later. Immediately it was clear that Kona doesn't have the best genetics in the world and despite what many would have you think, genetics DO matter. You can help genetics but you can't change them.

She's a very stressy dog and quite manic in her behaviour especially in a new place so we got stuck in and got Jack out because her aggression is worse to small dogs so the shitzu was the prime candidate! She did her usual, kicking off, teeth out, barking etc and we got to work.

Within about twenty minutes Kona was walking around with Jack no issues at all and starting to turn back to her handler to actively engage which is a very good sign.

Then we got a bit of real world training in when the mobile tyre fitter arrived so we had the noise of machines, and air guns and a bunch of other new sounds that we could train around as a bit of a secondary bit of training whilst the opportunity was there!

Then finally we got Khaleesi out and she was awesome. No reactions, working really well, happy and that's just what we want to see. She worked really hard so we stuck the dogs away and had a quick game of ball to finish whilst we did questions!

All in all a great session! Massive well done guys!

How Do You Stay Motivated?

This is a question I get loads, especially from Academy members, and clients. They see me training, they see results, they see me doing a bit every single day and they want to know.

The answer is... I don't always stay motivated and nobody does. I go through spells where I can't be bothered to train, where I can't be bothered to stand out in the rain and the wind and that's completely normal. Especially at the moment with the massive pandemic going on.

None of us can get together and train in person, we can't get to the free Academy days, most clubs aren't training and we can just get to a trainer for a 1-1 outdoors which isn't the same!

It is completely normal to feel like this and social media unfortunately makes everyone else's life seem better and more together than yours, but it's not. Very few people post their bad days on social media. They rarely post the days they can't be bothered, the sessions they missed, the bad sessions etc but we ALL have them!

When you have times like this, just tick along. Do a little bit to keep moving forwards. You don't need to make massive changes and do huge things. Just do a little thing today, to make tomorrow a bit easier and that's enough. There's no point in trying to force it!

Today we’ve had Noah in for his first session at the facility and he, and his owners were a breath of fresh air! Noah’s main owner is just seventeen and massively committed to helping him and improving his journey which is awesome!

Noah came today with reactivity to other dogs. Over the last year or so with the help of another trainer they’ve managed to improve it slightly but not to the point they wanted.

When Noah got out the car I could see a few fundamental problems with lead handling that needed sorting so I grabbed his lead to see what he’s like and within five minutes he was walking right next to Khaleesi no issues at all.

As with so many other clients the biggest issue was the lead handling of his owner and the mistakes they were making rather than the dogs behaviour.

Noah would usually be lunging and kicking off if he was closer than about a road width away but today he was walking on a footpath width no issues at all!

Super dedicated owners, super driven and a super result! Massive well done all of you, really enjoyed it!

Change It Up

Sometimes it can be all too easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re training, especially when you’re dealing with a behavioural problem. People with reactive dogs are often working really hard fixing their reactivity.

People with dogs that pull on the lead are drilling that and people who need more recall are drilling that which of course is important but you also need to remember to change things up a bit.

Changing things up can help reignite your passion for training and your dogs enthusiasm so have a think about something you’d love to teach but never have done and give it a bash!

For the last week or so I’ve just gone right back to basics with my three dogs. Training with food, having fun, little expectation and it’s honestly been really good fun! Whatever you do make sure it’s something you want to do.

And also make sure you don’t neglect all the work you have to do as well. Still train all the things you need but have some fun and change it up along the road!

How Long Should I Train My Dog For?

So this is a question that crops up almost every day in the Academy. People want to know how long I train my dogs for and how many sessions a day or a week I do and in truth it's not really the right way to look at things.

There is no set amount of time that's optimal for training despite what you will read in magazines etc. Loads of people want to say that the length of time directly correlates to the age of the dog but it's nonsense. Take Ernie in the picture (owned by Townview K9). He is a Dutch Herder and at ten weeks old he was far more interested to train a lot longer at that age than my shih-tzu ever has been so it depends on the dog.

Along with the breed of the dog you have to take into account the actual temperament of the dog. Some dogs are much more keen than others throughout their whole life. Some need a lot of stimulation, some need hardly anything. Some need to burn off loads of energy and some need absolutely nothing.

There's a load of variables that you have to take into account including what behaviour you are training. If it's a really difficult behaviour then you are probably better keeping it short.

The real way to work out how long you should be training is by looking at your dog and your results. Are you making good progress and both having fun? Then keep training that long. If you are both bored out of your mind and not making progress then you are probably training a bit too long.

Look at the dog in front of you and change your training accordingly.

So the Academy doors have been closed for a few weeks now to make sure that we didn't get too many members coming too fast and to make sure we continue to keep that family feel in the group!

4 Trainers Later

Well today we had a super easy lad in for a bit of training. Cody had pretty bad barrier frustration. Another dog within twenty feet or so and he'd be getting himself all wound up, kicking off, generally being a bit silly but nothing at all malicious or serious it's just a bit of a headache to live with on a daily basis.

And hats off to Cody's owner who has seen three other trainers before me and really, really tried to get to the bottom of it but wasn't really getting anywhere so he kept searching, jumped in my Academy and has been working away.

Today, it took literally minutes to get to the bottom of Cody's behaviour. He was very very straight forward to fix and not remotely complicated or difficult. The long and short of it is that nobody had communicated with him to tell him the behaviour he was doing was undesirable.

Little bit of operant conditioning, start building a new association to dogs and good to go as you can see from the video!

The joy of dogs like this is that they are desperate to find the right answer so as soon as he started understanding what we were looking for he gave us it without question, without argument, without anything.

All in all a really fun and easy session, a great end to the week and a very happy owner.

Jack and Kobe!!

Today we had these guys in for their first session and we had a blast! Jack is an active Dog Handler and has Kobe (pictured) and another dog called Ash. Jack was a silent member of my Academy, never posted anything and I didn't even know he was in it! Then out of nowhere he joined Evo when a slot opened up and has really gone from strength to strength which is awesome to see.

Jack came today without any problems but he just wanted to get stuck into his journey into the grail protection dog so we did some obedience with Kobe and looked at his relationship with Ash. Jack and Ash have got a great pet relationship but never found that fire within the work so we looked at some ways to build that and he has his homework now back home!

Really excited to see how these guys go because on top of Evo he's really getting the work in with some great decoys. He spends a lot of time with Asa Wright who is doing absolutely awesome work with his dogs, and he's down seeing Bullvision Dog Training on Tuesday for some more protection work.

It's great to see the end product of a dog when trainers have collaborated to improve him and he's definitely on the right track. Very excited to see how he continues in the future!

Well done Jack - Keep killing it! Let's get you that white collar!

Dave and Brian!

Another member shout out today and todays goes to this big lad called Brian! His name always made me laugh and Dave said he picked it to try stop the bad stigma attached to Rotties. Brian is a really nicely bred Rottie down from some great dogs, and he first came to see me with reactivity.

Dave came for a 1-1 session and got stuck into the Academy and his local Academy division group where people meet up and train with the heads of the division and get the work done and he has come on loads!

When Dave first came he had a tonne to learn about all things training and behaviour but he's taken it in his stride and really got stuck in with the work to help Brian with his reactivity and that's just all I want to see from members!

When people are willing to learn, and keen to learn, they are super easy to teach and they make a tonne of progress. Dave has made the most of the Academy and the divisions and has now branched out even more in his dog training journey!

Over the last few months he's been to see an IGP trainer to start working on the sport stuff of his training and he's a great candidate for doing well because he gets his head down and gets the work done!

Member Shoutout!

Today I want to give Wendy a massive shout out on the page because she continues to bring so much joy to the Academy members with her enthusiasm and desire to learn.

I met Wendy a couple of years ago now, I think the first time was at one of our workshops and from that day onwards she's always been so keen to learn, so keen to progress, and so keen to improve despite not having any huge behavioural issues.

Wendy started this journey with Pagan and was working away and then out of nowhere Flyer came into her life and she's continued to go from strength to strength.

It's been awesome to see her improve and solidify all her basics and it's also been awesome to watch her stepping into the more advanced behaviours at higher level.

I've always admired Wendy's enthusiasm, desire, and attitude. She continues to help people, push people forward and generally make members happy with her inputs!

Also if any of you fancy a dog holiday, Wendy has an awesome house with kennels that you can go and stay in - I am sure she will post a link in the comments!
